Manning Cup Champions

St. George's College

Going into the final as slight favourites (due to injuries and suspensions to their opponents), the 'Light Blues' displayed their class and quality in demolishing defending champions Jamaica College.

As expected, the Georgian whiz kid Shamar Shelton was the first to score for the North Street-based boys sending a powerful strike into the top of the net after just seven minutes of play.

The boys from Old Hope Road did not roll over and play dead, however, as they seemed unfazed by the continuous blinding attacks by the St George's front men.

Ashani Walker, who missed part of the season due to injury, was instrumental in JC's fight, but he failed to be as prolific as they had hoped as he wasted numerous chances with ambitious shots on goal. It was clear he was not yet back to full match fitness.

Dan Evans scored the second goal for STGC during the 26-minute mark, after he converted a clearance by JC stemming from a free-kick, 12 yards inside the penalty box.

Other notable players on the field were Kemal Malcolm, who created a lot of work for JC's defensive unit and JC,s Saeed Robinson' who supported Walker well.

St George's obviously did their homework well and went back to the drawing board to correct the mistakes they made after suffering a 3-2 come from behind loss to JC in the last game of the second round of the competition.

TEENage wants to congratulate the new champions and say to the losers so close, yet so far. We want to thank our readers for staying with us throughout the season and assure that its not over as Olivier Shield and DaCosta Cup are yet to be played. Stay tuned

Walker Cup Champions

Excelsior High

EXCELSIOR'S VALENTINO Fogo celebrated his 17th birthday with two goals to guide his school to a 5-1 thrashing of defending champions Calabar in the final of the Inter-Secondary Schools Association (ISSA)/Digicel Walker Cup at the National Stadium.

Fogo netted in the 24th and 45th minutes while Juvannie Benjamin (69th) and Neco Brett (88th), both substitutes, and Leon Powell (90th) also got on the scoresheet for the victors. Allay Cole scored for Calabar in the (59th minute).

Excelsior took control from the opening whistle when Powell's point-blank shot was specta-cularly saved by goalkeeper Cheven Powell five minutes into the first period.

A few minutes later, fleet-footed Fogo, who tormented the Calabar defenders with his quick dribbling skills and swift off-the-ball movements, came close to giving his side the lead but, with Powell at his mercy, his effort went wide of the target.

Scored goals

Fogo made up for his miss when he rose above two Calabar defenders to head home past Powell to give his team the lead halfway through the period.

Fogo scored his second goal on the stroke of half-time with a powerful point-blank left-footed shot which went like a rocket past Powell to give his team a 2-0 lead going into the break.

Cole gave Calabar a glimmer of hope 14 minutes into the second period with a spectacular 20-yard free-kick, which went like a bullet past Excelsior's Chevon Bowen.

Benjamin scored Excelsior's third goal 10 minutes later when he latched on to a pass from Fogo, then out sprinted three Calabar defenders and calmly slotted the ball home past Powell.

Brett then put the issue beyond doubt for the Mountain View-based school when he netted his team's fourth goal two minutes from time

DaCosta Cup Champions

St. James high

MONTEGO BAY, St James - St James High School captured their second title of the season after beating Spaldings High 2-0 in the final of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup football competition at Jarrett Park yesterday.

Before a massive crowd, goals from Nicolie Barrett late in the first half and the competition's 'golden boot' winner, Allan Ottey, with his eighth goal late in the second, made the Montego Bay school the 13th to hoist the trophy.

St James, who earlier in the season won the Ben Francis KO title, became the seventh school to win the rural area double and the third from Montego Bay after Cornwall College and Herbert Morrison.

St James High, who broke the two-year spell by Clarendon schools, will now move onto the all-island Olivier Shield Final against St George's College in Kingston on Wednesday, and Saturday at Jarrett Park.

The game lacked the spark and consistent high energy that both schools displayed throughout the season and was played at a pedestrian pace for long periods, especially at the start of the second half.
